Murray recorded a 6-4 6-3 win against the Romanian.
The world number one, who is continuing his return from an elbow injury after reaching the semi-finals in Barcelona, eventually forced a late break in a tense opening set before his superior power came through against the 26-year-old.
Murray was in fine form in the Spanish capital as he recorded just nine unforced errors to see off Copil in one hour and 23 minutes.

Copil, who will move into the top 100 next week, had initially put up some strong resistance, having saved two break point chances on his opening service game of what developed into a tight first set.
But Murray took the first set 6-4 after a nervy start but momentum carried him in the latter stages and saw him go into the second set full of confidence.
The Scot didn’t have to face a single break point and Copil never looked like troubling him in the second set as Murray wrapped up the match with some impressive forehand shots.
