BRITISH hopes evaporated in the Melbourne heat yesterday as Kyle Edmund and Heather Watson both crashed out of the Australian Open in the first round.
Britain's Kyle Edmund and Heather Watson have both been knocked out of the Australian Open
As the thermometer hit 35 degrees, Edmund was felled by cramp over the course of five sets as he went out to Damir Dzumhur 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Just as he had against David Goffin in the Davis Cup final last November, Edmund started well and was in charge of the match until his body started to give out on him and he was left to limp towards the exit.
