Carlos Alcaraz has shared his first impressions of the Laver Cup after making his debut at the team tournament.

The world No. 3 paired up with Alexander Zverev in the doubles on Friday night, losing to Team World’s Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz.

Although his Laver Cup campaign started with a loss, Alcaraz was delighted to see a special spectator in the crowd - Roger Federer.

Until now, Alcaraz hadn’t seen the 20-time Grand Slam champion since 2019. At the time, a 16-year-old Acaraz practised with Federer at Wimbledon, where the Swiss star went on to reach the final.

They finally reunited in Berlin this week. And Friday night’s doubles match was Federer’s first-ever opportunity to watch the four-time Major winner in action. Afterwards, Alcaraz said: ”Well, it was great, honestly, playing in front of him.

“It's the first time that he watch one of my matches in real life, and I'm really happy that he was there, you know, watching our doubles.”

But the 21-year-old is hoping that Federer will be back to watch him at his best, in the singles. “As I said, he watch doubles match. Well, I think I'm good but I'm not as good as the singles, I guess,” Alcaraz smiled.

“I hope to see him tomorrow in the singles. I hope he enjoyed the doubles match. Obviously was great seeing him in the practice. He didn't tell me any tactic, any advice, but I mean, he just told me that he's really happy about watching me in real life, that I'm here.

“So it was a great time for me that, I mean, I wish that moment for a long time, so it was a really good time.”

While Alcaraz and Zverev couldn’t score an all-important point for Europe, the Spaniard has been enjoying the team atmosphere. “Well, it is different. Honestly with the crowd probably I feel the same as probably other tournaments. They were great, once again,” he said of the Laver Cup.

“With the team, I mean, it was a different feeling that I loved. I loved these feelings, all the players in the bench supporting us, really pumped up.

“Yeah, it was a really good experience for my first Laver Cup match. Really want to experience this again in the singles tomorrow. Yeah, it's gonna, well, it has been a really good time for me.”

Alcaraz also left an impression on Federer, who is backing the world No. 3 to beat Shelton in singles on Saturday. “I’m sorry, Carlos is just an amazing player. He’s going to find a way to win,” the Swiss star said.
