Caroline Wozniacki appeared to mock Mayar Sherif during their first-round clash at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday.

The Dane is competing in the fourth Olympic Games of her career and has set her sights on earning her first-ever medal at the event. However, Wozniacki was forced to dig deep to avoid being dumped out of the competition by Egypt’s Sherif in the first round.

Sherif won the opening set in style, 6-2, and was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, prompting some antagonising tactics from Wozniacki. The 34-year-old appeared to mock Sherif’s vocalisations as she hit the ball.

Her opponent had been particularly loud throughout the bout, grunting throughout the opening two sets at Roland Garros.

Wozniacki soon responded with a sound of her own mid-match, making a loud shriek in the heart of a tense rally to indicate that she was growing tired of listening to her rival whilst trying to compete. She continued to imitate her rival in the following two points and also in the silence after the rally.

Although not integral to the outcome of the match, the former Australian Open champion managed to turn the game on its head after sending a sarcastic message to Sherif. She fought back from the brink of defeat to claim the second set 7-5 before dominating the decider with a 6-1 success.

The victory means that Wozniacki will face eighth seed Danielle Collins in the second round, in a game which promises to be a sensational clash. The American was leading her first-round match against Germany’s Laura Siegemund before her opponent retired mid-match.

The world No. 9 had claimed the first set 6-3 and raced into a 2-0 lead in the second set before Sigemund declared that she would be unable to continue embarking on her Olympic dream.

Wozniacki turning on her opponent due to their grunting is bizarrely nothing new for the Danish superstar.

Things turned sour in her match with Monica Niculescu at the 2018 Qatar Open after she complained about the timing of her opponent’s grunts, which she believed were in an attempt to distract her. She complained to the umpire and insisted that Niculescu was simply trying to ‘put her off’ with the irregular sounds, though the protest fell on deaf ears.
