Novak Djokovic: Roger Federer makes bold Australian Open prediction after shock loss
ROGER FEDERER says Novak Djokovic is still the clear favourite to win the Australian Open, despite the world No 1’s shock defeat at the Qatar Open.
Roger Federer: Novak Djokovic is the one to watch
Djokovic warmed up for the first Grand Slam of the year by competing in the Middle East, where he reached the semi-finals.
However, Roberto Bautista Agut came from a set and break down to send the Serbian home early.
Djokovic is expected to have a week off before he attempts to win a record-breaking seventh Australian Open title.
And Federer reckons the 31-year-old is likely to steal his crown, even though he faltered in the ATP Finals and Qatar Open.
“No doubt about it Novak is the guy to beat,” Federer said.
“I think he is the favourite, regardless of what happened in Doha.
“The guy had a super strong last five or six months of the season.
“Ever since Wimbledon, he struggled early but with his class and once he gets his groove back he is very tough to beat.
“People always doubt ‘is he ever really going to come back?’ but he knows how to hit a tennis ball."
Djokovic secured the year-end world No 1 trophy after finding top form in the second half of last year.
And he is expected to continue the momentum in the new season.
But Federer also warned about not writing off Rafael Nadal, who is currently trying to return from a series of injuries.
“Same with Rafa, I understand how tough he is to beat,” Federer added.
“If these guys show up 100 per cent then they are always going to be the favourites.”
Federer was speaking after guiding Switzerland to Hopman Cup glory this afternoon.
The Swiss beat Germany 2-1 in the final.
