Rafael Nadal discusses Roger Federer form ahead of US Open
RAFAEL NADAL says Roger Federer’s form is not concerning ahead of the US Open.
Federer has had a poor couple of months, by his own standards, in the build-up to the American Grand Slam.
The Swiss star failed to defend his Wimbledon crown, falling to a quarter-final defeat against Kevin Anderson.
He then lost in straight sets to Novak Djokovic in the Cincinnati Masters final - making a number of crucial unforced errors in the process.
That has led to bookmakers and pundits making Federer only the third favourite to win the US Open, which gets underway on Monday.
But Nadal reckons previous form goes out of the window for Federer when it comes to Grand Slams.
“It is important what happens before a Grand Slam,” Nadal said.
“If you’re playing well before it is easier to play well in the Grand Slam, no doubt about that.
“But at the same time it is true that a few players are able to increase their level of concentration, tennis and intensity in some place.
“And if you have to do it here is one of those places.”
Meanwhile, Federer has previously admitted he is not likely to win the tournament.
“I’m not the favourite; they are. Rafa and Novak, in my opinion,” Federer said.
“But I’m happy that my level is there. I just need to figure out my game, get used to different balls.”
