It didn’t quite match the script of his famous role in Hollywood film Speed, but there was no shortage of drama for Keanu Reeves on his auto racing debut on Saturday.

The world renowned actor, 60, took part in two 45-minute races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit, competing in the Toyota GR Cup North America event.

And midway through his first race, the Canadian slid across the grass on the exit of Turn 9.

Mercifully, he managed to avoid his vehicle colliding with another car and went on to finish the race.

Having qualified 31st out of the 35 cars and narrowly avoiding a crash on the first lap, Reeves had made his way into 21st position before his mishap. He eventually crossed the line in 25th.

He performed similarly in the second event on Sunday, finishing in 24th place. The races formed part of the support series for the Indy 8 Hour sports car event that took place over the weekend.

Reeves, 60, drove the No. 92 BRZRKR car, representing the comic book series written by him and Matt Kindt. Indeed, his appearance and car livery also appeared part of a bid to raise publicity for his new novel, ‘The Book of Elsewhere’.

In 2011, he co-founded the ARCH Motorcycle Company with Gard Holinge. Reeves has also made no secret of his love for motorbikes, with the design company still running with its headquarters in California.

But in terms of competing, this was not his first rodeo. Reeves’ love of motorsport has long been apparent, having previously been a participant in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach celebrity race. The star of The Matrix actually won the event in 2009.

And fans seemed pleased to see him back on the track, with @SPaceApeHBAR writing on X: “Why am I not surprised by his latest achievement. Keanu has been impressing us throughout his life.”

“Keanu’s face encapsulates how it feels to drive a racecar,” added @Butterlegs_. @rajjsylvesterr said: “He’s definitely gonna release a car racing movie soon. Big win.”

Reeves is yet to comment on his pro-racing debut, or confirm whether he’ll compete again. The celebrity has already committed to a project for next year, confirming he’ll make his Broadway debut in 2025 in the Waiting for Godot play.
