World Darts Championship 2020: Full schedule and results as Van Gerwen goes for glory
The World Darts Championship is back following the Christmas break and Express Sport is on hand with the full schedule.
The World Darts Championship is already looking like a tournament that will last long in the memory. Defending champion Michael van Gerwen and history-maker Fallon Sherrock feature in the post-Christmas line-up.
Sherrock has taken Alexandra Palace by storm this year.
The 25-year-old become the first women to win a match at the World Championship and followed it up with another victory in the second round.
She got the better of Ted Evetts in the opening round before beating world No 11 Mensur Suljovic.
But her spectacular run came to an end against Chris Dobey in the third round.
Sherrock said: "I'll tell you what, I've actually enjoyed myself so much. Chris played so well. Unfortunately, it wasn't my [day], but I can't take it away from him, he played so well. Good luck in the next round. I've enjoyed it so much."
She added: "I didn't think this was ever possible. Thank you to everyone. This is amazing. Hopefully, I can experience it again.
"Hopefully I'll be back here next year. I've got the ladies' BDO World Championships next week so let's see where I go from there."
Van Gerwen continued his title defence by seeing off former Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting in the last 16.
The Dutchman is heavy favourite to retain his crown but admits there are “three of four” players that can still win it.
”I don’t really want to say that because I can have a bad day as well; not that often, but I can have a bad day,” Van Gerwen said.
“Three or four [can win the World Championship], in my opinion.”
“I don’t care about other players. They have to do their own thing. It’s quite a selfish game.
“Only one tournament a year you have to play together and that’s the World Cup, but even then I do my own preparation.”
