LeBron James responds to criticism and makes championship prediction for Lakers
LEBRON JAMES is confident of the Los Angeles Lakers forming into a championship-winning franchise next season, despite missing out on this year’s NBA playoffs.
The superstar spoke to Spectrum Sportsnet about the franchise’s prospects next season, and reiterated that he didn’t come to LA just for the lifestyle off-court.
The Lakers have had a poor season, and missed out on the postseason after a defeat to the Brooklyn Nets.
James’ season was effectively ended on Christmas Day as he suffered a groin strain against the Golden State Warriors.
That injury kept him out of 17 games, but after he came back he was still apparently in pain, with his personal trainer admitting he should have sat out the rest of the season.
After he returned to the court, he was ineffective as the Lakers were unable to recapture their form.
This led pundits in America to criticise the star for his move to Los Angeles, with some suggesting he only went there for interests off-court.
That theory was magnified after it was confirmed that he will produce and star in Space Jam 2 this summer, a sequel to the 1996 Michael Jordan film.
James insisted this was not the case, however, and said he was confident of the team winning a championship soon.
“I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t believe this franchise was all about winning,” he said.
“That’s what this franchise is all about.
“Some things that are known don’t need to be said.
“I believe Jeanie [Buss], Linda [Rambis], Magic [Johnson] and Rob [Pelinka], and everybody who has anything to do with this organisation, this is what it’s about.
“It’s absolutely fair that our fans feel the way they feel.
“We’re either competing for a championship, or we’re winning a championship, and I love that.
“That’s why I’m here.
“I want to add to these trophies here, and I want to add to the banners that are up in Staples Center.”
