Open and shut case for Simon Khan
JUST 24 hours after his PGA joy at Wentworth, England’s Simon Khan suffered play-off misery as he failed to qualify for next month’s US Open at Pebble Beach.
Simon Khan, 37, had fought against exhaustion through a 36-hole qualifier at Walton Heath that left him one of six players tied at seven under chasing five places in the year’s second Major.
But while his five rivals managed a birdie at the 286-yard par-four first on Walton Heath’s new course, Khan missed his attempt from 15 feet.
“It’s a great shame,” said Khan. “But I don’t feel too bad because the win at Wentworth on Sunday was just wonderful. I was absolutely exhausted by the time of the play-off.”
Among yesterday’s other failures were Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn, Thomas Levet and Colin Montgomerie, who now plans to be a TV commentator at Pebble Beach.
