Man Utd transfer news: Jose Mourinho backed to improve on Victor Lindelof with key signing
MANCHESTER UNITED signing Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld would be an upgrade on current Red Devils centre-back Victor Lindelof.
Alderweireld would be a better signing than Lindelof says expert
That is the opinion of ESPN FC pundit and former Major League Soccer star Alejandro Moreno.
Alderweireld is linked with a move to Manchester United after turning down a contract extension at Spurs.
Tottenham have an option to extend his current deal to 2020, but a clause means he would be allowed to leave next summer for just £25million.
So Spurs are reportedly keen on getting as much as they can for the 29-year-old in this window, with United favourites for his signature.
He would be a better signing than Lindelof
He would be the second centre-back Manchester United have signed in the last 12 months, with Victor Lindelof joining from Benfica for around £30m last summer.
Lindelof did not have a successful first campaign at Old Trafford as he struggled to gain a regular place in Jose Mourinho’s side.
But Moreno reckons Alderweireld would be a more successful signing than the Swede.
ESPN reporter Mark Donaldson said to Moreno: “This time last year I thought Lindelof was going to be a good signing for Manchester United.
"Would Alderweireld be a better signing?”
And Moreno responded: “He would be a better signing than Lindelof.
“Hang on to that Lindelof one, that really worked out!”
Donaldson concluded on Lindelof: “He’s still got time. Patience, patience.”
