"Arsenal are a forward thinking team and they like to play football," the former England international told football.london.
"You've got to have players who want to defend. It's great having the ball but in moments when you're under pressure you want that defensive side to kick in.
"At the moment the balance between the attack and possession play is not spot on because the midfield keep it, but the back line don't keep it as well.
"Then you get under pressure because in the one-on-one situations, you need to be stronger. Just doing simple and boring things well, and I don't think they've done that."
Campbell insists Arsenal’s issues are down to their players rather than Arsene Wenger.

Arsene Wenger is set to leave Arsenal at the end of the season
"I don't think it's down to him," Campbell added. "Some of the players have not been strong enough in one-on-one situations, the vital moments.
"In the vital moments, you need someone to put their head on it, or make the right tackle - or even just being in the right position. It's been lacking.
"It comes down to individuals taking care of their game. I don't think that's all down to Arsene.
"Most of the guys are top players and can pass it well, but it's the finer details in their game in the vital moments that they've been lacking.
"I've seen games where it's fine details - positioning here and there - small margins. You've got to be on it for 90 minutes."
