Ukraine launched a massive wave of drone attacks against Russia in the early hours of Monday, inflicting major damage across the country.

Kyiv has stepped up its areal bombardment of its eastern neighbour, striking targets deep inside Russia.

Ukraine's generals have remorselessly attacked airbases, oil depots and industrial sites, as they seek to disrupt Putin's formidable war machine.

In the latest attacks, 47 drones targeted the Rostov region in a massive bombardment.

Local residents reported hearing explosions at 4am, along with the sound of Russian air defence systems desperately trying to shoot the UAVS down.

Video footage of the attack shows a thick column of black smoke rising from the Morozovsk military airfield.

Satellite images taken afterwards and published by Planet Labs appear to show that the drones struck five areas of the airbase.

One was the location of an S-300/400 air defence system, another was the parking area of a SU-24 fighter jet that had been spotted there on July 20.

A further fighter jet parking area was hit, as was a fuel and lubricants warehouse. The airfield's runway was also struck in the raid.

The Morozovsk airbase is home to a number of Russian fighter jets, which include Su-34s, Su-24s and Su-24Ms. The fighters are used to attack targets in Ukraine.

It is not the first time that Ukrainian UAVS have attacked airfields in the Rostov region.

In April and June of this year, at least 6 Russian jets were destroyed and the same number were damaged.

Additionally, drones attacked an oil refinery in Tuapse on Monday, setting it on fire.

Tuapse is a resort town and a major port on the Black Sea coast, located near Sochi and Krasnodar.

The blaze quickly engulfed an area of 50 square meters. A total of 91 firefighters attended the blaze and managed to eventually put it out.

A video shows the dramatic moment the drone crashed into the oil depot, causing a huge explosion and a giant ball of flames to leap into the sky.

Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed it had shot down and destroyed over seventy drones on Monday.

"Air defence systems on duty intercepted and destroyed forty-seven UAVs over the Rostov region, one over the Belgorod region, one over the Voronezh region, one over the Smolensk region and eight over the Krasnodar region region, as well as seventeen UAVs over the waters of the Black and Azov Seas," they said.
