Chris Coleman is waiting to hear back from a transfer target, believed to be Chris Martin
A deal until the end of the season has been agreed with Derby County for Scotland international Martin, who has been on the fringes at Pride Park in recent months.
The 29-year-old - also a target for Championship rivals Reading - was on Wearside yesterday but continues to mull over a switch to the Stadium of Light.
Coleman, who refused to name Martin, said: “We thought that something was over the line but it is not at the minute.
"We have a deal with a club and we are waiting for an answer, if you like, a decision from a player.

“Again, I can’t mention the name of players or clubs, but that’s where we are.
“Until it is done, I can’t say ‘yeah, I’m super-confident’.
“Until I’m sat in front of you saying, ‘yes, he’s here’, then we are where we are.”
Sunderland are relying on teenage duo Josh Maja and Joel Asoro to lead the line after seeing Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan depart.
Joel Asoro fired Sunderland to victory against Hull
The Black Cats climbed off the foot of the Championship table thanks to a 1-0 win over Hull City, with Asoro on the scoresheet.
But Coleman said: “We have to bring in reinforcements. You can see the vulnerability of the squad and it is tough for young players to go week-in, week-out, where we are in this league.
“It’s no good saying that because we’ve won we have all the answers and we are going to be alright now.
“We have to build on what we have got, help the squad out with a bit of strength in depth, and go all out to do that.”
