Rafa Benitez disappointed by lack of January signings
Newcastle failed to sign a single player last month, despite Benitez instructing the club of his need to strengthen his squad.
The Magpies, who sit second in the Championship, were linked with a move to re-sign Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.
Managing director Lee Charnley and owner Mike Ashley failed to sign Rafa Benitez's targets
Benitez insists managing director Lee Charnley and owner Mike Ashley were aware of his targets, but failed to deliver.
"My decision was very clear, [but] it was not my decision," Benitez told Sky Sports.
"I said what I wanted and needed, and what the team needed, and that was it."
He later added in his press conference: "I can't change things now. We knew what we needed and we knew what we have.
"I'm disappointed (not to have signed anyone) but I have to concentrate on the players we have."
And when asked if he was surprised by the club's lack of signings, the Spaniard added: "Yes."
