MANCHESTER UNITED failed in a late bid to sign Benfica star Victor Lindelof, according to reports in Portugal.

The 22-year-old is one of Jose Mourinho's top targets with the Manchester United manager keen to bolster his defensive ranks.
Mourinho outlined no players would be leaving or coming in on deadline day, but it appears as if he tried to negotiate a deal to secure Lindelof's signature.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola claim Benfica president Luis Filipe Viera was in England after finalising Helder Costa's move to Championship side Wolves.
But he also met up with United officials to discuss Lindelof's potential move to Old Trafford.

Lindelof has made 11 appearances for Sweden and has scored one goal
However, United were unable to strike a deal with Benfica for the centre-back before the 11pm deadline.
Lindelof is valued at £38m and has impressed for the Portuguese outfit this season, keeping 12 clean sheets in 24 appearances.
The Sweden international signed for Benfica in 2013 and is contracted to the club until the summer of 2020.
