A tweet from Liverpool legend Carragher’s account was published this morning appearing to announce he had become the next star to move to the cash-rich Chinese Super League.
“Official announcement, delighted to announce I am coming out of retirement, looking forward to getting back on the pitch,” the tweet read.
Carragher retired in 2013 and has since worked successfully as a TV pundit for Sky Sports.
And the former England defender tweeted an hour later to suggest he had been hacked.

Jamie Carragher was involved in a on-screen dispute with Neville and Carragher about Paul Pogba following his performance in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.
Then this afternoon the 38-year-old clarified the situation by blaming Merseyside boxer Smith.
“Not hacked after all! @LiamBeefySmith & a few rats in the gym got into my phone. Only one positive it may alert the China clubs I'm available,” Carragher joked.

John Obi Mikel left Chelsea for China in January
When mocked by one fan for playing for Liverpool having grown up an Everton fan, the pundit added: “Thank god I did! I don't need to go to China now I can just talk about Istanbul.”
And when teased by Bleacher Report UK about the tweets, Carragher took the opportunity to put the boot into former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel who joined Chinese Super League club Tianjin TEDA earlier this month.
“Of course! If Mikel got the move I've got a chance!!,” Carragher said.
