Paddy McNair could miss the rest of the season through injury
McNair ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during the 3-0 win against Hull on Saturday after colliding with Tigers defender Curtis Davies.
The Northern Ireland international picked up the injury just before half time but carried on playing until the 88th minute after suffering another knock.
Paddy McNair has featured in 12 games for Sunderland this season
A Sunderland statement read: "Paddy McNair has been ruled out of action after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.
"McNair, 21, faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines."
And Sky Sports claim the 21-year-old is expected to be ruled out for the rest of Sunderland's season as he will require surgery.
Paddy McNair only joined Sunderland from Manchester United in the summer
The news will come as a blow to David Moyes ahead of Sunderland's difficult trip to Premier League high-fliers Liverpool on Saturday (3pm).
McNair arrived at the Stadium of Light in the summer from Manchester United after being deemed surplus to requirements by Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils academy graduate has featured 12 times this season for Sunderland, who currently languish 19th in the table.
