Manchester United have struggled this season and are sixth in the table, nine points behind leaders Chelsea and six behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
They have conceded 14 goals - more than all the teams above them other than Liverpool.
And Mourinho is keen to address the balance in his team by adding two quality additions.

The Daily Mirror report that Southampton defender Van Dijk is his main target to come into the central of defence.
And that Bayern left-back Alaba is the man he wants to bring in at full-back.
Aleksandar Dragovic is a back up option if Southampton are unwilling to Van Dijk sell mid-season.
But Mourinho is set to be bankrolled by Ed Woodward again despite spending more than £150million in the summer.

Alaba is rated at £40m while Van Dijk would cost at least £30m - but is also wanted by Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp's title challengers have also let in 14 goals and are reportedly eyeing a swoop for Van Dijk and his young team-mate Sam McQueen, who can play at left-back or on the wing.
United deployed Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo at the heart of defence against Arsenal with Matteo Darmian on the left and Antonio Valencia on the right.
Valencia is the only one of those four who would start in Mourinho's ideal side but the Portuguese has doubts over Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, and Daley Blind.
Eric Bailly, who signed for £30m in the summer, is out until Christmas and will be away during the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mourinho claimed his defence lacked height and presence after drawing with Arsenal at the weekend following Olivier Giroud's late equaliser.
