Motherwell stars not for sale
Motherwell boss Mark McGhee has warned top stars Chris Porter and Stephen Hughes won’t be sold in January because he would rather make a real push to recapture third spot and then lose them for nothing.
The influential pair are both in the final year of their Fir Park contracts and McGhee has confirmed getting his influential striker and midfielder to sign extensions is high on his list of priorities.
McGhee is long enough in the tooth to know that he may be unable, financially, to keep the pair and if they do move on then he would rather make full use of them now, like he did with Ross McCormack, than try to make a quick buck out of them.
“I would hope neither of them will be sold in January, McGhee insisted.
“We are hoping they will sign extensions but if they don’t, like Ross (McCormack), I am hoping we bite the bullet and see it through to the summer.
“We have mentioned it to both them but we need to push on with those talks.
If they do well enough and somebody wants to take them then we can’t say to players okay you are getting offered £6,000 but would you not be better staying here because we have a great bunch of lads
“Like Ross we have to be prepared to realise that we can’t stand in these boys way.
