The winger joined United from Palace as Ferguson's final signing in 2013, but he returned to Selhurst Park permanently last year after failing to live up to expectations.
The England international cost United £15million, but Louis van Gaal sold him for an initial £3m in February 2015 following three loan spells.
Pardew said: "I spoke to Sir Alex in the week. He was asking about him because I think he's genuinely disappointed it didn't work out for Wilf."
Meanwhile, Express Sport understands Chelsea are ready to make a move for the £40m-rated striker Antoine Griezmann, who is also a target for United.
