Newcastle relegation shock: Club plan to sell Shelvey and Townsend after contract blunder
NEWCASTLE face the prospect of paying Jonjo Shelvey £80,000 a week next season after failing to negotiate a relegation wage cut, according to reports.
Jonjo Shelvey joined Newcastle from Swansea in January
Toon bosses are already preparing for life in the Championship by slashing Andros Townsend's price tag to £8million.
And they will hope to offload midfielder Shelvey onto a Premier League club to avoid paying his staggering £4.1m-a-year wages in England's second tier.
Newcastle 'capable' of survival - Benitez
But the club may reportedly sell the former Liverpool player simply to get his five-year contract off their books.
And he is not the only player in the squad without a relegation clause.
It is added Moussa Sissoko may also remain on his current deal - £55,000 a week - if Newcastle dropped down a division.
Newcastle sit 19th in the Premier League, six points off safety with six games remaining.
