Revealed: Manchester United’s new stadium plans
MANCHESTER UNITED have put plans to build a new stadium on hold, according to reports.
Nicky Butt, new head of the academy, will not be getting a new mini-stadium
United had planned to build a mini-stadium to house their youth teams similar to the 7,000-seater Academy Stadium which Manchester City have built on the other side of the city.
The youth system is currently undergoing a mass overhaul as United try to catch up with their Manchester rivals after the opening of the state-of-the-art City Football Academy last year.
The United hierarchy are said to be worried by the fact that City’s youth teams are now routinely beating their United counterparts, turning the tables on the Red Devils after years of dominance.
The move comes just weeks after Nicky Butt was unveiled as the new head of the academy at Old Trafford, 11 months after his predecessor Brian McClair moved to work with the SFA.
Butt described the job as a ‘big challenge’ which now appears to have become even bigger as budget cuts start to affect the academy’s facilities.
