After a penalty shootout victory in the Capital One Cup, City return to league action with a rematch against Liverpool tomorrow night (7.45pm).
But they could be 12 points off the top of the table even before kick-off in a year when no one team has taken control of the title race.
And while McManaman doesn’t have an answer, he knows one Manchester United legend who does.
“But you would never expect them to go from that to being bought out by the richest man in the universe and the club to do what they’ve done.
“But still I can see what the fans are thinking about.
“This year they must be scratching their heads.

“They’ve spent really well in the summer, won the first five games with clean sheets, their nearest rivals in Chelsea had an awful time early on in the season and they must have thought they were going to win the title by Christmas.”
