“Stefan was absolutely outstanding last year. People expect him to go on the rampage and do whatever he wants all the time.
“But he is getting tougher treatment from opponents in Scotland this season. He is getting a lot more attention.”
Johansen, whose current contract is due to expire in 2017, will be in action for his country in Euro 2016 play-off games with Hungary tomorrow and on Sunday.
Norway manager Per-Mathias Hogmo also defended Johansen and insisted he remains vital for the national team.
He said: “When Celtic go through a tough period and Stefan is a key player, then it’s only natural he will get criticised.
“But he is a leader of my group and we are very pleased with him for Norway.
“He kept playing even when he was injured, so it is understandable his form dropped a little.
“But I watched him in the game against Ross County and he looks more match-fit than ever and he was very good.
“He has struggled a bit with his injuries, but he looks back to his best now.”
