Ryan Giggs (right) is currently Louis van Gaal's assistant at Manchester United
Club legend Giggs is currently in line to replace Van Gaal when the Dutchman's Old Trafford contract expires in 2017.
But the Sunday Mirror now claim United officials are unwilling to offer Giggs the top job.
Instead, they will make a move for Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola, leaving Giggs' future at the club in doubt.
Guardiola, who led Barcelona to three Liga and two Champions League titles before switching the Bayern, has refused to sign a new deal at the club and reportedly plans to leave the Bundesliga giants at the end of the season.
And that has left United in a quandary, the SundayMirror report.
Guardiola's appointment would certainly reflect United's new stance as a recruiter of football talent rather than developer, with 19-year-old Anthony Martial's £36m arrival a case in point.
Giggs, part of Sir Alex Ferguson's old guard, is one of the lingering remnants of that success-ridden era.
Were he to leave in the summer during a management overhaul, it would leave Wayne Rooney as the sole representative of Ferguson's title-winning class of 2013.
