Van Gaal and wife Truus (behind) walk through Manchester Airport
Van Gaal and wife Truus boarded a Ryanair flight to Portugal at Manchester Airport.
The pair were spotted joining the queue for the budget airline after being driven to the airport in the Dutchman's Mercedes S 500 car - worth a reported £100,000 - by a club driver.
The driver took their luggage to the Ryanair check-in and then walked them to passport control.
Van Gaal has taken the opportunity for a break with many of his players on international duty
Van Gaal is taking a break at his holiday home in the Algarve - the place he has promised his wife they will live once he eventually retires.
"All the players have to fly out to international duties but I will go on holidays and I'm willing to go to my paradise in Portugal," he said.
