SPFL ready to fine Rangers and Motherwell for rewarding their fans with play-off discounts
SPFL chiefs are set to fine clubs who allow season ticket holders into the end-of-season play-offs for free.
Stuart McCall hopes to guide Rangers to second place
Rangers – and Motherwell if they are involved – are keen to reward loyal fans with free entry to the crunch deciders.
But yesterday the league board rejected the notion – 12 months after they broke their own rules.
The SPFL are due a 50 per cent cut of gate receipts and they are now playing hardball.
But Hibs fans got into the play-off clash with Hamilton last May for free with the SPFL backing down on the rules.
But they are now getting tough with much more cash involved this season.
Rangers – who could face three play-off rounds with 75,000 fans across three games affected – may ignore the ruling.
The SPFL, though, will still demand a cash sum equivalent to the amount that would have been raised via ticket sales.
And if that isn’t forthcoming they have the ability to hit the club with a fine to make up the shortfall.
