REVEALED: The footballing moments that caused a FRENZY on Twitter in 2014
EXPRESS SPORT runs the rule over Twitter to give you social media's winners and losers.
Wayne Rooney's goal against Uruguay caused a stir on social media
Most tweeted about incidents
The World Cup generated a host of the most tweeted about incidents in the past year.
Germany's 7-1 defeat of Brazil in the World Cup semi-final was the most tweeted about moment in 2014.
That shock result was closely followed in the standings by Rooney's equaliser against Uruguay and Sturridge putting the Three Lions on level terms against Italy.
In club action, it was Real Madrid's late equaliser in the dying minutes to take the Champions League final to extra-time that was most tweeted about.
And while David Moyes' time at United was generally deemed a failure, the Red Devils taking the lead against defending champions Bayern Munich in the quarter-final of Europe's top competition caused a massive stir.
Luis Suarez was the most tweeted about player in 2014
Most tweeted about events
Unsurprisingly, the World Cup was the most tweeted about sporting event in the past 12 months, with the Commonwealth Games and Wimbledon coming in second and third place.
Arsenal's triumph over Hull City in the FA Cup final was the tenth most tweeted about sporting event in 2014.
Most tweeted about players
Ex-Liverpool star Luis Suarez was the most tweeted about Premier League player followed by Manchester United stars Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao.
Arsenal fans ensured Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil took fourth and fifth place with Liverpool's Mario Balotelli, ex-Chelsea man David Luiz, Dutch striker Robin van Persie, Chelsea signing Cesc Fabregas and Manchester City's Sergio Aguero rounding off the top ten.

In a year in which the word 'selfie' has been mentioned 92 million times on Twitter leave it to Arsenal's Lukas Podolski to steal the show with his on-pitch World Cup final selfie becoming one of the most memorable.
