Jupp Heynckes: Why Real Madrid was a BETTER move than Man Utd for Toni Kroos
FORMER Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes claims he persuaded Toni Kroos to stay at the Allianz Arena, but the German deemed a move to Real Madrid rather than Manchester United to be best for his career.
The 24-year-old swapped the Bundesliga powerhouse for the Spanish capital in the summer when he signed for £23m.
Manchester United coveted Kroos' signature, but the talented midfielder wasn't interested in moving to Old Trafford.
Though Kroos hasn't looked back, Heynckes lamented losing his services, but admits he couldn't stand in his way when Real came calling.
"At the moment, there is no better player in his position in the world," Heynckes told Kicker.
"Toni plays the midfield role so cleverly.
"I would have rather seen him remain at Bayern and I had advised him to.
Toni Kroos is flourishing at Real Madrid
Toni Kroos told me that the move was perfect. For him, personally, it's another step that suits him
"But in a telephone call during the World Cup he told me that the move was perfect. For him, personally, it's another step that suits him."
Heynckes however has conceded he isn't taken aback by the way Kroos has adjusted to life at the Bernabeu.
"The top stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale know very well that they are even better with Toni in the team," he added.
"In addition, Real coach Carlo Ancelotti has said that he has never seen a team with such wonderful character.
"So there have been no problems with integration for Toni."
