Marco Rojo has been ruled-out for up to six weeks with a dislocated shoulder
Rojo received oxygen and was stretchered off just before the hour mark at the Etihad, leaving Van Gaal with a makeshift back four of; Michael Carrick, Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and youngster Paddy McNair.
Rojo joined Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Rafael and Phil Jones on the ever-growing injury list, and will certainly miss United's clash with Arsenal after the international break.
The good news for United fans is that the Argentine international won't require surgery on his shoulder - an operation that could have significantly lengthened his spell on the sidelines.
In typically robust fashion, Van Gaal said he wouldn't cry about his defensive woes.
He said: "It is like it is and I don't want to complain or cry because I have great belief in the players, myself and the fans."
