Skipper Johnnie Jackson headed home in added time, from Astrit Ajdarevic’s corner, for Charlton’s first win since Boxing Day and Rangers’ third successive defeat.
Charlton were often starved of the ball for lengthy periods as Rangers knocked the ball around, with Tom Carroll and new signing Ravel Morrison equally adept at keeping the Charlton challenges at bay.
But Harry Redknapp’s team had only themselves to blame for not turning all that possession into victory.
They carved out, and wasted, plenty of chances – and Morrison missed a gilt-edged one moments before Jackson struck.
