"Kieran [Gibbs] is injured and is definitely out."
However, the Gunners will welcome the return of Mikel Arteta who is back from suspension and Wenger hinted that Olivier Giroud, who was dropped from the defeat against Bayern, could feature against Sunderland.
He added: "It is likely that Olivier [Giroud] will be involved tomorrow. Resting him was part of a refreshment plan."
Aaron Ramsey (thigh) and deadline-day loan signing Kim Kallstrom (back) are also not fit. Abou Diaby and Theo Walcott are long-term absentees with their respective knee injuries.
