EXPERIENCED: Spurs want to make Van Gaal their manager this summer [GETTY]
Spurs are sixth in the league, and Sherwood knows that he must achieve a Champions League finish if he wants to stay in his role.
Chairman Daniel Levy oversaw a major squad overhaul last summer before sacking ex-boss Andre Villas-Boas, and wants a world-class manager to turn his club into title challengers.
Spurs held talks with Van Gaal before handing Sherwood the reigns, but the Dutchman was not keen on holding two managerial roles.

However, Van Gaal has now declared his desire to quit the Dutch national side after this summer's World Cup, and Levy looks set to take advantage of the situation.
"Look at my CV. I have won a trophy every season during my club career," Van Gaal said.
"I am a winner and craving a trophy. This is why I am sick of being a national coach. I only see the players eight times a year. I am not enjoying the job of national coach at all.
"After the World Cup I want to coach a big club again and win trophies. Otherwise I will retire."
