Derby newbie Johnny Russell Rams home his potential
JOHNNY RUSSELL is loving life at new club Derby after helping them to an impressive 3-0 win at Championship newcomers Yeovil.
Russell scored a second goal since his £750,000 move from Scottish Premiership side Dundee United to give the Rams a 42nd-minute lead.
He helped create another for Craig Bryson three minutes later, before Chris Martin sealed victory early in the second half.
“The gaffer says he has brought me in to score goals and hopefully I can repay some of the faith he’s shown in me,” said 23-year-old Russell.
“As every week goes by I am settling more into the team and the style of football, and I will only get better with time.”
Yeovil’s on-loan midfielder Joe Ralls said: “Those two goals in quick succession killed us, but I don’t think we really turned up.”
Jamie Vardy is finally taking to life in the Championship after a difficult first season with Leicester and his 78th-minute goal helped to secure a 3-2 win over Birmingham.
Vardy, with two goals in four games, said: “It took me a while to settle in but I’ve worked hard in the close season.
“I came back fitter and stronger and hopefully it can pay off. I just have to keep it going now.”
Ipswich goalscorer David McGoldrick admitted they have to stop throwing away the lead after doing it for the third time in four games to lose 2-1 at Leeds.
“We can’t keep performing all right and not getting anything,” he said. “We’ve got to be more ruthless.”
Bournemouth have now conceded 11 goals in two away matches after a 5-1 loss at Huddersfield.
Skipper Tommy Elphick said: “We don’t want to get a reputation as a team that can’t travel. We’ve two more away games coming up and we need to put things right quickly.”
Goals from Andrew Crofts and Leonardo Ulloa earned Brighton a 2-0 win over Burnley.
