David Moyes is Manchester United's own Special One
DAVID MOYES has been hailed as Manchester United’s very own ‘Special One’ and backed to continue bringing silverware to Old Trafford.
As Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea moved a step closer, Moyes’ credentials were championed by Phil Neville, whose unique insight is shaped by having started his career at United before spending eight years working under the Scot at Everton.
Moyes takes charge of the dynasty built by Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 38 trophies in a glittering 26-year reign, on July 1.
Neville discounted the claims of Mourinho – who is free to return to Chelsea next term after it was announced he is leaving Real Madrid – to insist Moyes is the only manager capable of following Ferguson and maintaining the sort of success that has become second nature to United.
“He is the best candidate, 100 per cent,” said Neville.
“He is not at United for two or three seasons. If Jose Mourinho came to Manchester United you would think, with his track record, that in maybe three seasons he would be gone.
“Manchester United are looking at the next 20 years.
“They’ve just given David Moyes a six-year contract.
“There is no one else they could have invested in who would offer the same longevity as the previous manager.
“The pressure will always be there and he will have to win games and win trophies. He will do that. People talk about Jose Mourinho being the Special One, but the gaffer has something special about him in his own way.
“He keeps producing. Every season at Everton people would say he is going to get stale and the club would finish in the bottom half – but that never happened.
“That shows you he has got something.”
