Wayne Rooney: Man United aren't good enough
DEFIANT Wayne Rooney last night told Manchester United: You’re no longer good enough to win silverware.
It was a devastating response 24 hours after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that he did not know why his star player did not want to sign a new contract.
Rooney is no longer convinced United’s ambitions match his own because of the debt problems that the owners, the Glazers, have placed on the club .
Unhappy that Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez have left in the past two seasons, he revealed he had talks with United chief executive David Gill last week about the club’s plans.
“He did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad,” said Rooney.
“I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract.
“I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday, and surprised by some of it.
“I have never had anything but complete respect for Manchester United. How could I not, given its fantastic history and especially the past six years in which I have been lucky to play a part? For me, it’s all about winning trophies – as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that, I think the questions I asked were justified.”
His words will only serve to hasten his departure in January – with Manchester City remaining favourites for his signature.
