Liverpool were given a taste of what a team containing Trent Alexander-Arnold and Anthony Gordon could look like over the weekend.

The Reds enjoyed a relatively quiet summer transfer window, though they did come close to splashing the cash when they looked to capitalise on Newcastle’s PSR situation.

Liverpool reportedly agreed a £75million deal to sign Gordon from the Magpies which would have seen Joe Gomez head to Tyneside, but talks ultimately broke down after Eddie Howe’s side decided to sell alternative players, such as Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

Arne Slot’s side remain interested in Gordon nonetheless and a move further down the line has not been ruled out, despite Newcastle reportedly opening talks with the winger over a potential new deal at St James’ Park.

The higher powers at Liverpool will certainly be enthused about pushing for Gordon again in the future, may that be in January or next summer, after seeing how well he linked up with Alexander-Arnold on Saturday.

In Lee Carsley’s first match as interim England manager, the 50-year-old decided to play Alexander-Arnold in right-back against the Republic of Ireland – rather than in central midfield like how Gareth Southgate utilised him.

On the opposite side, Gordon was given a rare start for the Three Lions, and he took the opportunity with both hands to showcase why he was underplayed at Euro 2024.

The ex-Everton star shone with his desire to race in behind and make direct runs, which proved to be an ever-present nightmare for the Irish backline. Gordon’s attacking-minded style also brought out the very best in Alexander-Arnold and showcased what the pair could provide at Anfield.

The Liverpool defender had a constant outlet when he was afforded time to pick his pass and was often able to switch the play knowing that he had a winger eagerly waiting to run at the opposition defence.

Alexander-Arnold picked out Gordon on several occasions, with a long pass unlocking the Ireland backline for England’s first goal in their 2-0 victory.

The partnership was a great advert for why Liverpool may be willing to pay big money to acquire the services of Gordon from Newcastle, especially as the winger, 23, and Alexander-Arnold, 25, could run riot in the Premier League for many years to come.
