Newcastle have struggled in the summer transfer market so far but there are five potential deals that could give Eddie Howe a dream conclusion to the window.

The head coach disappointed Newcastle supporters when he announced that the club wouldn't be able to sign a centre-back or a right winger this window, causing some dismay among fans. Howe also admitted that it has been one of his most challenging transfer windows during his tenure at the club.

PSR rules led to a rush to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh back in June to raise funds and avoid breaching financial limits. However, Lewis Hall has made his loan from last season permanent, Lloyd Kelly and goalkeeper John Ruddy arrived on free transfers, and the club signed Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos amid further PRS complications, reports the Mirror.

Despite the disappointment felt by Newcastle fans about their summer activity, there are still some deals that could happen between now and the 11pm deadline on Friday night to salvage their summer business. We examine what deals Howe and his team could secure to make it a memorable transfer window.

Marc Guehi: IN

Newcastle's interest in the Palace defender has been ongoing throughout the summer. The club have put forward several separate offers for the Eagles star, but all have been turned down so far.

Chronicle Live has learned that negotiations are still underway with Palace, and the deal for Guehi is not entirely off the table despite him being appointed as Palace's captain for the upcoming season. However, if Newcastle wish to lure the England centre-back away from Selhurst Park, it could cost them upwards of £70m.

It's a significant portion of their budget to spend on one player, but Guehi is viewed as the game-changing player that St. James' Park needs. Strengthening Newcastle's defence is a top priority this season after it came under frequent pressure last year, and the club is looking for experienced English players to bolster their ranks, making Guehi their primary target this summer.

Raheem Sterling: IN

In what could be one of the transfer window's biggest surprises, Raheem Sterling is in desperate need of a new club after being sidelined at Chelsea by Enzo Maresca. According to GiveMeSport, Howe is reportedly interested in the 29-year-old winger, who is currently embroiled in a complex swap deal involving Manchester United and Jadon Sancho.

However, if that deal proves too complicated to finalise, Newcastle could potentially step in and offer Sterling a lifeline in the Premier League. Despite financial constraints, the Magpies are also said to be interested in two of Sterling's Chelsea teammates, Noni Madueke and Axel Disasi - although securing deals for all three at this late stage seems like a tall order for the club.

Martin Dubravka: OUT

Martin Dubravka has been the subject of transfer speculation after the signings of Ruddy and Vlachodimos, but Eddie Howe has kept him on board and recently preferred him in a pre-season match against Brest. Commenting on the player after the game, Howe said: "I thought Martin did really well today and he's a really valued member of our squad."

With five goalkeepers now at the club, it is speculated that Newcastle may look to offload the Slovakian before the transfer window shuts if a suitable offer is presented.

Kieran Trippier: OUT

The defender - who retired from England duty earlier this week - appears to be unsettled at St. James' Park. Despite potential interest from Everton, Howe expressed his hopes he would stay, saying: "My wish is that he stays. But I can never answer with absolute certainty. He continues to be really valued by all of us."

However, it's understood that the player is keen to leave. The former England right back has also caught the attention of West Ham, Atalanta and Galatasaray. Bayern Munich also made a move for Trippier in January, but Newcastle rejected their £13million offer.

However, any future bids could be considered as the full-back seeks to continue his career elsewhere and Newcastle look to make a profit.

While Newcastle's first choice is to secure Marc Guehi to strengthen their defence, they have an alternative in RB Leipzig's highly-rated Mohamed Simakan. Simakan is a versatile defender who can play both centre back and right back, and Newcastle are among many clubs interested in securing his services before the transfer deadline.

The 24-year-old Frenchman, who reportedly has a €70m (£59m) release clause at Leipzig, has drawn the attention of numerous clubs across Europe this summer. Liverpool are believed to be Newcastle's main competitors for the player, according to Sky Germany, but it's reported that the Reds have now cooled their pursuit of the defender, potentially leaving Newcastle with a clear path to Simakan.

The prospect of Newcastle adding star quality to their ranks before tonight's deadline is up in the air, yet manager Eddie Howe offered a glimmer of hope during his recent talk with Sky Sports. Expressing his intentions for the squad, Howe indicated: "We are still looking for one or two players that can make a difference for us. We'll never stop until the window shuts to try and add to the group."
