The Football Association (FA) are reportedly keeping a close eye on the ongoing situation at Newcastle, having shortlisted Eddie Howe as a potential target for the England vacancy.

The higher powers at the FA are assessing all available options as part of their managerial search following the departure of Gareth Southgate after Euro 2024.

Lee Carsley has stepped up into his position with the under-21s to become the Three Lions’ interim boss, and the 50-year-old has impressed in his audition for the role so far, very quickly winning over the support of the dressing room.

However, the FA have not settled on their top candidate for the position thus far and other options are being explored, with reports claiming that Graham Potter and Pep Guardiola are among those on the shortlist.

According to HITC, Carsley and Howe are the top candidates for the position though, and the ongoings at Newcastle have set off alarm bells at the FA.

Top chiefs at the association are keen admirers of the former Bournemouth boss and have had him on their radar for a matter of years, with his recent three-year spell at St James’ Park enhancing his claims further.

Speculation has been rife since the conclusion of the summer transfer window that all is not rosy at Newcastle, with a ‘civil war’ ongoing between the higher powers at the club after an unsuccessful few months in the market.

New sporting director Paul Mitchell has not shied away from bearing all about the Magpies' activity, saying the scouting network was ‘unfit for purpose’ and that he was not particularly fond of how the side recruited previously.

The tense situation has led to a level of uncertainty brewing around whether Howe will remain on Tyneside as he is growing 'concerned' with the situation, and the FA are keeping tabs on the situation in case the Englishman ultimately walks away from his position due to the conflict.

He played down talk of a behind-the-scenes rift when speaking earlier this week but the tension between himself and Mitchell is reportedly becoming clear, and a much-awaited move into international management could be on the cards for the 46-year-old sooner rather than later. However, if Carsley continues to shine as interim boss then the FA could find it difficult to justify bringing in an alternative candidate to the ex-Everton midfielder.
