Raheem Sterling’s potential move to Manchester United could hinge on Chelsea finding a way to clear a £70million black hole in the winger’s contract.

Chelsea would owe Sterling £70m in unpaid wages and bonuses for the three years still remaining on his contract if the Blues were to force him out the door this summer.

That’s according to the Daily Mail who have reported United are unwilling to lend a helping hand to their Premier League rivals.

Sterling is said to be interested in the prospect of joining United, given he’s keen to make a return to the north west, having spent seven years down the road at rivals Manchester City.

Prior to that Sterling broke through the Liverpool academy and is said to still boast an existing network of friends in the region.

It’s claimed by the outlet United will not make any concessions in the final week of the window, largely because the Old Trafford outlet have a heavy wage problem of their own to deal with.

Given Jadon Sancho pockets a rumoured £250,000 per week, United are desperate to balance the books and remove the Englishman's salary from their wage list.

A swap deal between United and Chelsea for Sancho and Sterling had been mooted, but it’s suggested that remains an unlikely outcome as things stand.

Instead, any deal that sees Sterling sign on the dotted line for United would have to be done on terms that are favourable to the Red Devils.

United are keen to see Sancho leave the club this summer, preferably on a permanent transfer, with Juventus one of the sides said to be most interested.

Talks between United and the Serie A outfit are believed to have taken place, but a move might depend on Juventus being able to raise funds, with United favouring a straight cash deal.

It comes after a summer of hefty investment from the INEOS Group at Old Trafford, with Manuel Ugarte set to take the club’s summer spending above the £200m mark.

Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt have already put pen to paper on United moves this summer, as Erik ten Hag looks to bounce back after a disappointing season last time around.

United have until 11pm on Friday to wrap up all their business for the summer.
