Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has made his feelings very clear on social media amid uncertainty in the summer transfer window.

The club captain has shown his support for team-mate Tom Heaton as the 38-year-old goalkeeper's future at Old Trafford hangs in the balance with his contract set to run out this summer.

Heaton, who returned to Utd in 2021 after his spell at Aston Villa, may have to bid farewell to the Red Devils soon despite being an influential figure in the dressing room. Nevertheless, discussions are ongoing about a potential new contract.

While there is uncertainty over his club future, Heaton has joined the England squad for the Euros in Germany. Although he won't feature in any games, he'll take part in training and lend his experiences to the group.

Acknowledging his call-up in an Instagram post, Heaton expressed his pride and excitement: "Incredibly honoured to be asked by Gareth to join the squad. To get the call to go to a major tournament, to help in anyway I can and pass on my experience is a proud moment. We have a great squad, I'm excited and can't wait to join the group."

Responding to Heaton's post, Utd captain Fernandes was quick to show his admiration for the veteran goalkeeper in what is a reminder to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co about what he brings to the table: "Great leaders are always welcome in any place. Congratulations big man."

Heaton's announcement sparked a flood of congratulatory messages from his team-mates including Diogo Dalot, Altay Bayindir, and outgoing coach Benni McCarthy.

England boss Gareth Southgate explained Heaton's inclusion: "I am really pleased Tom has agreed to join us in Germany. Experience tells us that a tournament can put a lot of demand on our goalkeeping group led by Martyn Margetson. Tom will play an invaluable role on the training pitch supporting Jordan [Pickford], Aaron [Ramsdale] and Dean [Henderson].

"Off the field as someone we all know well, he will add to the positive environment we are always looking to create. We are grateful to Manchester United for their support in making this happen."

Heaton's international debut came in a warm-up match against Australia before Euro 2016.

He also featured in games against Spain and France, with the latter marking his only start for England. Heaton's latest appearance at club level was for Utd in a 2-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup semi-final during the 2022/23 season.
