Brentford are reportedly expected to step up their interest in Liverpool’s wantaway star Sepp van den Berg this summer.

Arne Slot is set to orchestrate a major rebuild of his newly-acquired Reds squad, with big-money signings expected to arrive at the expense of several fringe stars.repetition of 'this summer'

Caoimhin Kelleher, Joe Gomez and Calvin Ramsey are among a host of players linked with moves away from Liverpool, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain also keen to acquire the services of Luis Diaz if he becomes available.

Van den Berg is attracting interest from a number of sides and his public plea to the Liverpool higher powers to be sold is prompting other teams to monitor his situation.

Following a successful loan spell with Mainz 05 last season, the Bundesliga outfit are desperate to retain the services of the defender and are already pushing to strike a deal for the Dutchman.

However, they will face competition from Brentford in the race to secure the signature of the 22-year-old, reports The Mirror.

The Bees are said to have shortlisted Van den Berg as a target to bolster their backline next season, with his versatility proving attractive to Thomas Frank’s side as they look to strengthen their defensive depth.

Despite interest from Mainz and Werder Bremen, Brentford are ‘confident’ of signing the talented prospect but will need to wait to learn whether their top target will even be offloaded by Liverpool.

Slot is said to be responsible for making a decision on the future of the Reds’ fringe stars, though Van den Berg’s recent comments may have helped him move closer to the exit of Anfield – slamming the club for slapping a £20million price tag on him heading into the summer transfer window.

He recently told De Telegraaf: “(Liverpool) didn't exude confidence in me all this time, but you do want to hinder my future. I want to keep playing every week and develop myself further. In Germany, I enjoy Dortmund away with 70,000 people, Bayern Munich away against Harry Kane, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Leverkusen, against clubs like that I am challenged every week."

Liverpool are expected to bring in defensive reinforcements, which may have offered Van den Berg another opportunity to prove his worth on Merseyside. However, with his heart seemingly lying elsewhere, the Reds may cash in on the defender to raise funds for new signings.
