Jude Bellingham and Harry Maguire have both left supportive messages to ‘devastated’ axed England star James Maddison. Gareth Southgate has trimmed Maddison from the provisional list of 33 players that were called up ahead of Euro 2024.

Maddison and Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones have left the Three Lions camp after being informed that they will not travel to Euro 2024.

Southgate will need to cut his list of 33 players to a squad of 26 by Friday night. Uncapped Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah is also reported to have been excluded from the final squad.

Maddison revealed that he was ‘devastated’ in a lengthy Instagram post. Bellingham has since commented with an anguished-looking emoji, while Manchester United defender Maguire sent two heart emojis.

England and Chelsea icon John Terry responded with a fist-bump and a blue heart. Many of Maddison’s Tottenham team-mates also sent their support, with Pedro Porro, Brennan Johnson and the recently-released Ryan Sessegnon among those in the comments of the 27-year-old’s post.

“Devastated doesn’t quite cut it,” Maddison wrote on Instagram.

“Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make.

“I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different and had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that.

“I’ll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home.”

Maguire himself is reportedly considered a doubt for the tournament. The 31-year-old centre-back missed the final weeks of Man Utd’s campaign with a muscle injury, which ruled him out of their FA Cup triumph.

According to the Telegraph, individuals inside the England camp harbour ‘doubts’ over Maguire’s involvement at the tournament, with England facing Serbia in their first match in just 10 days’ time.

Marc Guehi and Jarrad Branthwaite will wait in the wings to partner John Stones at the heart of England’s defence this summer.
