Tottenham have announced that they have released Ryan Sessegnon, bringing an end to his underwhelming stint with the club.

The defender arrived at Spurs in 2019 with the expectation that he would develop into one of the top full-backs in the country, and therefore push Luke Shaw for the spot as England’s left-back on the international stage.

However, the 24-year-old made just 38 appearances in his five years on the books in north London, with recurring injuries meaning that the vast majority of his time spent at the club he has been unavailable.

Sessegnon joined Tottenham from Fulham in a deal worth £25million after the Craven Cottage outfit were relegated back to the Championship following a string of promising campaigns, with the higher powers at the club pouncing on the opportunity to cash in amid interest from top clubs around Europe.

Even Jose Mourinho was pleased to work with the England Under-21 international when he took charge of Spurs, saying: “I think Ryan is absolutely fantastic, I have known him since a kid in Fulham.

“When he comes to the first team in the Premier League it is different to the Championship. I think in this moment he is a winger on the left, can also play on the right, can learn progressively and even developing physically, which he is doing. Even last time I saw him and the first time I met him, when I came here he is already different physically.

“I think Ryan can play as a left-back. Probably the left-back in the last decade was Ashley Cole, in spite of him being from two enemy clubs, but he was fantastic. But Ryan has lots of similarities with Ashley, and he can learn how to defend.”

Hamstring problems have been the most significant hindrance for Sessegnon, though the defender will be hoping that the surgery he underwent last season could solve the issue so that he can hit the ground running elsewhere.

After showing so much promise during his time with Fulham, the left-back is likely to attract interest from several sides this summer – with the player hoping to get his career back on track with a Premier League outfit.

Now a free agent, Sessegnon could be viewed by many teams as a player worth taking a chance on given that he is homegrown and also capable of providing depth in several departments – when fit – having been deployed on both wings previously.
