Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be set for an awkward reunion with Jose Mourinho if he decides to join Besiktas this summer. The Turkish side are reportedly keen to acquire the services of the former Manchester United manager, who he has previously rejected an offer from.

Solskjaer has been out of work since he was sacked by the Red Devils in November 2021 following a torrid run of form. The 51-year-old has been linked with several vacancies since, both domestically and at international level.

Besiktas are among those to have attempted to court him previously, and The Mirror report that the Turkish side remains insistent on luring him to the Super Lig.

Solskjaer is said to have rejected a one-and-a-half-year contract with Besiktas last December, but his decision has not deterred their interest and the higher powers at the club believe he is the ideal Fernando Santos replacement.

Several familiar faces, such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wilfried Zaha, are currently playing in Turkey, it has been revealed that Mourinho has also opted to head to the Super Lig this summer.

The Portuguese boss is set to join Fenerbahce on a two-year contract after a surprise agreement was reached between the parties, and his decision could encourage Solskjaer to return to the dugout following his subtle feud with the ex-Chelsea manager.

The pair have exchanged blows about their respective tenures at Old Trafford previously, with Solskjaer claiming that ‘a lot’ needed to change after he succeeded Mourinho at United. After refusing to comment on Mourinho claiming that the Red Devils had worsened since his departure, Solskjaer explained: “I felt a lot needed to be changed. We’ve signed four players and lost quite a few and promoted from within, lots of youngsters.

“I don’t know how dramatic those changes have been. I don’t think it feels dramatic for the squad and the ones that were here. We needed certain pieces in the puzzle and they’ve worked. I’m a red and I think I know what this club needs.”

Solskjaer often attempted to play down the brewing rivalry with his predecessor, but Mourinho publicly fuelled the fire after leading Roma to Europa Conference League glory in 2022. The ex-Tottenham boss hinted that he had won trophies at the majority of his previous clubs, a feat which Solskjaer did not manage at the Theatre of Dreams.

He said: “As you know, I have won European competitions with four different clubs. Winning with Manchester United, even though it was a Manchester United side that lacked the quality of proper United sides, winning with Manchester United is almost natural.”
