Steve Bruce is frustrated in his attempts to sign a central defender for Sunderland
Strengthening his back four has been a priority for Bruce following John Mensah’s return to Lyon, after a loan spell with no prospect of a permanent deal.
While he hopes to land Argentine full-back Marcos Angeleri, who is awaiting an Italian passport before he can sign, finding new recruits is proving more problematic.
Top target Heiko Westermann is poised to join Hamburg from Schalke, while interest in Manchester City’s Nedum Onuoha has cooled and Bruce is still awaiting an answer from Sol Campbell.
Bruce could turn to Titus Bramble, with whom he worked at former club Wigan.
