World Cup 2010: Spain hail King Carles Puyol
CARLES Puyol sent Spain into their first World Cup final with a thumping header that finally ended Germany’s stubborn resistance in Durban.
Puyol met Xavi’s corner with a huge leap and a perfect header past Manuel Neuer in the 73rd minute to leave the European Champions with the prospect of an historic double.
Spain will meet Holland in Sunday’s final at Soccer City, guaranteeing a new champion whatever the outcome.
Pedro did his best to shred the nerves of his team-mates – and the whole of Spain – by choosing to ignore the unmarked Fernando Torres and losing possession when a second goal looked certain.
But Germany, who wasted an excellent chance to open the scoring themselves through Toni Kroos, were unable to make him pay.
