Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is set to miss an extended period of time after undergoing knee surgery on an injury he picked up in the Blues' defeat to West Ham on Sunday. The English starlet has started both of Mauricio Pochettino's opening two Premier League games in charge, but the Argentine is facing another injury setback after Christopher Nkunku and Reece James had also been sidelined.
In a statement on Tuesday, Chelsea said: "Carney Chukwuemeka sustained an injury to his left knee during our game against West Ham United on Sunday. Last night Carney underwent surgery and will now begin his recovery. The 19-year-old will work with the club's medical department on his rehabilitation at Cobham."
The Times have claimed that Chukwuemeka will miss six weeks after the club confirmed that Chukwuemeka had undergone surgery, as he will continue his rehabilitation at the club's training complex in Cobham.
After defeat at the London Stadium, Pochettino spoke about Chukwuemeka's potential injury. "Now we need to assess him, tomorrow. See what happened with his knee. It was really bad luck," he told Sky Sports, before adding: "At half-time, we were upset about the start of the game.

"We conceded a few situations and we were aware of that. But we changed Carney for Misha [Mykhaylo Mudryk] and from the beginning also, we started late. Then we conceded the second goal and that helped West Ham to really believe in the result. We will see tomorrow [Chukwuemeka's injury]. Being assessed by the doctor."

The injury came in the same game after Chukwuemeka scored his first goal for Chelsea and was beginning to cement himself in the first team, having moved to Stamford Bridge from Aston Villa last summer.
The teenager took to his Instagram story to reflect on the injury. "From Joy to Pain in minutes," he wrote, referencing the short time between his goal and injury. "1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. God I thank you for blessing me with my 1st goal for Chelsea. A moment I've prayed so hard for & dreamt of since I was a kid. I know your plans for me are greater than my own.
"Nobody can stop what you have already written for me this season. Minor setback but I will be back stronger than ever. Thank you Chelsea fans for your love & support. See you soon."
