Pochettino states aims for Chelsea after taking over as manager
Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Chelsea are looking to seek a replacement for the injured Christopher Nkunku. The French forward picked up a knee injury during their pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund, shortly after completing a £53m move to Stamford Bridge from RB Leipzig.
Chelsea confirmed the 25-year-old will be out for an 'extended period' after undergoing surgery to fix the issue with his knee and so Pochettino must now scramble to find a replacement for him as transfer deadline day looms.
"We feel very sorry about him. He was very important for us," he said when asked about Nkunku before Chelsea's Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday.
"Now it's about not to think too much about the injuries and to be positive about when he can be back with us as soon as possible. We are working in the market also, trying to find a solution, maybe short-term, medium and long term to find the right profile for the team."
This comes after some dramatic developments regarding Moises Caicedo's future. Earlier in the day it seemed he would be on his way to Liverpool with the Reds agreeing a £111million deal with Brighton to bring him to Anfield but according to Fabrizio Romano, Caicedo has informed the Merseyside club that he only wants to join Chelsea.
Caicedo agreed personal terms with the Blues back in May and he wishes to keep his word to the club. Chelsea are now expected to submit an improved offer matching that of their rivals.
Pochettino remained coy about the transfer during his press conference. "I never talk about players who don't belong to us. We are working hard to add more players to the squad and if we have some update to make for you the club will do," he added.
"At the moment I will not talk about players who do not play for us. Like any club, we are trying to add more quality to reinforce our squad With Paul, Laurence and the owners, the relationship is really good."
But he did admit that they need reinforcements in the centre of the park. "It's obvious when you look at the squad and when you compare to last season too many midfielders leave the squad," he added when asked about an area they can improve upon.
